PVC started with Baumann

Eugen Baumann, a forward-thinking chemist and researcher, played a pivotal role in the development of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), contributing as one of the leaders to its invention. Born on December 12, 1846, in Cannstatt, Germany, Baumann’s contributions have left a significant imprint on the polymer industry, shaping the realm of PVC manufacturing.

Beginning his career as a pharmacist in line with his father’s path, Professor Eugen Baumann later transitioned to chemistry. He unintentionally synthesized PVC in his laboratory by exposing a flask of vinyl chloride to sunlight, echoing Regnault’s experiment 34 years earlier. The resulting PVC formed a hard, solid white lump, though it remained unnoticed and unfortunately unpatented due to its unique nature.

Eugen Baumann commenced his academic journey at the University of Strasbourg, studying chemistry under professor August Kekulé. Tragically, Eugen Baumann’s life and career were abbreviated when he passed away on November 3, 1896, at the age of 49, succumbing to heart disease.
